City Lights

large

It was the city lights
that called
drew us from home
to a strange land

Mere babes from woods
we followed the unknown path
and ended
more lost than found

Holding hands
and surviving on kisses
we were sure
our road
was paved with gold

The grown world
too harsh
too large
we were misunderstood

In the streets
faces of loved ones
haunted our backs
the search leading
right to our hiding place

The promise
of warm beds
and bleeding hearts
made our eyes wide
with missing

Thank you
for running with me
for believing
I was worth everything
